After two days watching from the sideline, Robert Ayers returned to the defense on Sunday, working with the second team after spending the last two days watching from the sideline.

“It was (hard to sit out), but it was for a good reason,” Ayers said as he left the field following the two-hour session, held in chilly, drizzly conditions. At the end, it’ll make me a better player and a better person.

“Every rep you miss is always a loss. You just learn from your mistakes and move forward, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Ayers declined to specify the reason for his absence, which followed copious work with the first team during the previous open organized team activities, but McDaniels said the issue had “resolved itself.”

“He’s fine. Again, I commend him for the work he’s done and the way he’s approached this entire offseason,” Ayers said. “We’re all excited to move forward with that. I know Robert is. There’s no other issues with that.”
With Ayers watching from the sideline the previous two days and being with the second unit Sunday, Moss worked with the first team. McDaniels said both former first-round picks will compete for playing time at outside linebacker at training camp.

“We’ll probably move them in and out,” McDaniels said. “We have multiple guys we can move around at that position, and because of some things we can do in our nickel and dime packages, we may rest a guy so they can play on third down, also.

“They know they’re in a competitive situation. I think both of them will improve because of it. We’re going to let that play out.”
